Internal and External Validity in Economics Research: Trade-offs between Experiments, Field Experiments, Natural Experiments a

چکیده
In the realm of empirical research, investigators are first and foremost concerned with the validity of their results, but validity is a multi-dimensional ideal. In this article we discuss two key dimensions of validity – internal and external validity – and underscore the natural tension that arises in choosing a research approach to maximize both types of validity. We propose that the most common approaches to empirical research – the use of naturally-occurring field/market data and the use of laboratory experiments – fall on the ends of a spectrum of research approaches, and that the interior of this spectrum includes intermediary approaches such as field experiments and natural experiments. Furthermore, we argue that choosing between lab experiments and field data usually requires a tradeoff between the pursuit of internal and external validity. Movements toward the interior of the spectrum can often ease the tension between internal and external validity but are also accompanied by other important limitations, such as less control over subject matter or topic areas and a reduced ability for others to replicate research. Finally, we highlight recent attempts to modify and mix research approaches in a way that eases the natural conflict between internal and external validity and discuss if employing multiple methods leads to economies of scope in research costs. *Roe is professor in the Department of Agricultural, Environmental and Development Economics, Ohio State University. Why a Trade-off? the Relationship between the External and Internal Validity of Experiments*
Much of the methodological discussion around experiments in economics and other social sciences is framed in terms of the notions of internal and external validity. The standard view is that internal validity and external validity stand in a relationship best described as a trade-off. However, it is also commonly held that internal validity is a prerequisite to external validity. This article a...
متن کاملOn the Autonomy of Experiments in Economics
Most methodological discussion in experimental economics has been pursued by justifying the use of experiments as theory testing vehicles. More recently it has also been argued that the external validity of experiments requires the use of nonexperimental field evidence. Therefore, it is argued, experiments are intermediaries between theories and field evidence. In this paper it is proposed that...
متن کاملThe External Validity of Laboratory Experiments : Qualitative rather than Quantitative Effects
Laboratory experiments are used to address a wide variety of questions within economics, including whether behavior is consistent with the predictions and assumptions of theory and how various mechanisms and institutions affect the behavior of economic agents (see Roth 1987 for an overview). The experimental laboratory has become an integral part of the field of economics and a productive dialo...
متن کاملEvaluating Online Labor Markets for Experimental Research: Amazon.com’s Mechanical Turk
We examine the trade-offs associated with using Amazon.com’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk) interface for subject recruitment. We first describe MTurk and its promise as a vehicle for performing low-cost and easy-to-field experiments. We then assess the internal and external validity of experiments performed using MTurk, employing a framework that can be used to evaluate other subject pools. We first ...
متن کاملDo People Behave in Experiments as in the Field? Evidence from Donations
Laboratory experiments are an important methodology in economics, especially in the field of behavioral economics. However, it is still debated to what extent results from laboratory experiments can be applied to field settings. One highly important question with respect to the external validity of experiments is whether the same individuals act in experiments as they would in the field. This p...
